Year Six Travel to London

A post in our latest news section.

Year Six pupils enjoyed an inspiring and highly successful day trip to London, marked by exemplary behaviour and memorable learning experiences. The day began early at Durham Station, where the group gathered before boarding the 06:09 train to King’s Cross. Spirits were high as pupils arrived in the capital shortly after 09:00, ready to immerse themselves in a day of culture, history and discovery.

Year Six set off on foot through Bloomsbury, passing notable landmarks including the British Library, Russell Square and several historic university buildings. Their morning destination, the British Museum, provided an enriching exploration of a range of collections which supported our History curriculum. Pupils engaged eagerly with the Egyptian, Anglo Saxon and Viking exhibits with Sutton Hoo being a favourite amongst the children! We also spent some time admiring the Elgin Marbles.

After leaving the museum, the children enjoyed a picturesque walk through the West End and Piccadilly Circus before reaching Buckingham Palace. The afternoon continued with a short tube journey from Green Park to Westminster. We arrived at the Houses of Parliament for our scheduled tour and workshop; the pupils were lucky enough to witness live debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Pupils left with a deeper understanding of parliamentary processes and even got to ask our M.P. Luke Akehurst, a number of questions.

After the workshop concluded we had an enjoyable evening meal at Pizza Express; the final stretch of the day involved a walk back to King’s Cross in time for the return train to Durham, where pupils arrived tired but delighted after a full day of meaningful learning.

Overall, the trip was a resounding success, offering pupils a rich blend of cultural, historical and civic education. The children represented All Saints’ with pride and maturity throughout…a fantastic time was had by all!
