Year Two Visit Locomotion Museum

A post in our latest news section.

Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Locomotion. In the morning, we explored the train shed. We used our science knowledge to explore the different materials used in constructing the engines and the carriages. We noticed on the Locomotion 1 replica they used wood to form the water tank. Alec realised this was because wood is easier to carve and shape and that this engine was built before they invented plastic! On the Flying Scotsman, we saw a lot of metal which we decided was used because it is strong and not flammable. On the carriages we spotted glass, fabric and even paper. It was also really interesting to go into the cab and find out how the steam trains were driven.

In the afternoon, we found out all about George Stephenson. He was an engineer from Wylam in Newcastle. He only learned to read when he was 21 years old! George Stephenson invented Locomotion 1 which ran on the Stockton to Darlington railway, and we have the chance to recreate this great event. Kate became George Stephenson and drove the train from Shildon down to Darlington. Our guide was also impressed that we knew the word perseverance- she was explaining how George showed great perseverance when creating the Geordie Lamp- a safety lamp designed to be used down the mines.

We learnt a lot on our trip out but we also represented our school well! Two members of the public even commented on our fantastic behaviour. A great day was had by all.
